SEAL TEAM
SEAL TEAM
On the G.I. Joe team, the SEALs are primarily deployed on combat diving and SCUBA operations. However, while SEALs specialize in operations on, in or underwater, they are equally at home on dry land, be it in the jungle, desert, mountains, or arctic conditions. All SEALs are BUD/S graduates; are dive, parachute, and demolitions qualified. The G.I. Joe SEAL Team is a traditional 8-man SEAL squad made up of two 4-man Fire Teams. A typical SEAL Fire Team will include at least one machine gunner, to guard the rear of the patrol, and for engaging area targets, with 2-3 riflemen for engaging point targets.
The SEALTeam possess several core skills: Sniper, Breacher, Communicator, Maritime/Engineering, Close Air Support, Corpsman, Driver, Navigator(Rural/Urban/Protective Security), Heavy Weapons Operator, Sensitive Site Exploitation, Air Operations (Parachuting/Helicopter Insertion, etc.), Climber, Interrogator, Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Technical Surveillance, and Advanced Special Operations.
As with all Navy SEALs, the G.I. Joe SEAL Team are graduates of Naval Special Warfare Preparatory School (NSW Prep) in Great Lakes, Illinois and all phases of Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) Training and SEAL Qualification Training (SQT) at the Naval Special Warfare Center within Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, California. SEAL Team unit members have also passed Marine Corps Combatant Diver Course at the Navy Diving and Salvage Training Center, Naval Support Activity Panama City, Panama City, Florida; Navy Underwater Egress Training at Pensacola Naval Air Station, Florida; and Army Combat Divers School, Key West, Florida. They are also graduates of Army Airborne School, Army Northern Warfare Training Center, Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center, and Army Military Free Fall Parachutist School. They have passed Level C SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resist, and Escape) Training at both Air Force Training Center and the Navy Remote Training Site.
Individual SEAL Team members can be called in as advisors or specialists on specific missions for other detachments. When not deployed as SEAL Team Leader, Chief Warrant Officer 4 Edward W. Leialoha (code name TORPEDO) serves as Assistant Detachment Commander on G.I. Joe A-Team missions. The SEAL Team like all G.I. Joe naval operations are under the command of US Navy Vice Admiral Everett P. Colby (code name KEEL HAUL). The SEAL Team's base of operation is the USS Flagg.
Navy Diver - Second Class Malcolm R. Willoughby (code name DEEP SIX) is assigned to the G.I. Joe the SEAL Team to provide diving technical expertise and supervisory support to all SEAL Delivery Vehicle (SDV) and submersible operations. SDV missions are sometimes conducted using Submersible High-speed Attack and Reconnaissance Craft (SHARC) vessels.
